Walk this way for a unique live folk trail!

11 August 2025

Join us on Wednesday 13 August, for a walk around the Okehampton Folk Trail – the unique 1.5-mile town trail illustrated by traditional regional folk songs which link local stories to eight locations along the route.

Musicians from Wren Music will be joined by local heritage guide Paul Rendell who will fill in all the historical information.

The walk starts on West Ockment Bridge on West Street at 2.30pm and will include selected songs from the full programme punctuating the walk.

The afternoon is rounded off with a cream tea at our HQ at Ebenezer Hall in North Street as the trail finishes at 4pm. Tickets are £10 including the cream tea and are available from our Eventbrite page: www.bit.ly/live-folk-trail

The trail is entirely on paths with only slight inclines, and the 90-minutes or so allows for time to stop and listen to stories or songs at each location. Because some of the specific locations are now residential buildings, we’ve made slight adjustments so that all the stopping points are public spaces.

We launched the trail in September 2023, with help from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and photographs kindly supplied by the Museum of Dartmoor Life, Okehampton.

The route and songs are:

West Ockment Bridge – Rosemary Lane

Peel House – Botany Bay

Public footpath alongside Castle Ham Lodge, Castle Road, the site of the old workhouse – A Maiden Sweet

Fairplace Sensory Garden – Harvest Song

St James Chapel – Coast of Barbary

The Moor gate mural at junction between East Street, Crediton Road and Northfield Road – Twankydillo

Ebenezer Hall in North Street – My Coffin Shall Be Black

Fore Street Plaque in front of St James Chapel – Joan’s Ale

You can see the route map and archive photos and read more about each location on this page on our website.
