Take a seat on the coach to join Wren Music and the Devon Association of Ringers on a unique tour of bell towers of West Devon and East Cornwall to recreate the story of the bellringing contest from the song ‘The Devon Bellringing’ (from the Baring-Gould collection).
One day in October
Neither drunken nor sober
O’er Broadbury down I was making my way
When I heard of some ringing
Some dancing and singing
I ought to remember that jubilee day
Enjoy live performance of songs and live bellringing. Judges will explain the marking criteria and guide you through the contest. Experts will share the history of the song and the Baring-Gould Folk Song Collection. And at one church you can have a go at bellringing.
Meet at 8.30am to catch the coach. A light lunch will be available on location at 12.30pm. After the contest we will all return to Okehampton for a special ‘Ringers Supper’ together at 7.30pm – finishing by 9.30pm. All meals will be prepared by our friendly volunteers Ale&Cake.
Please note: the coach will not be wheelchair accessible. If you are a wheelchair user and wish to join the tour please contact us by email ([email protected]) and we can share the itinerary so you can use your own transport.
