Wren Music creates new inclusive folk ensemble for young people
Our Devon Inclusive Folk Ensemble for young people aged 8-18 is re-launched this month, with the first session taking place on Saturday 27 May.
The ensemble is a chance for young people and their families to sing and play together.
The new group meets one Saturday afternoon a month at InFocus College, Topsham Road, Countess Wear, Exeter, from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. The hour is divided into shorter sections so that people can stay for as long or as little as they like.
The ensembles are led by two of Wren Music’s professional musicians, Jenny Read and Sarah Owen. Jenny said: “Our inclusive ensembles are very informal and relaxed and are for anyone who wants the chance to make music with their families. Siblings are welcome to join us. It’s a friendly, welcoming environment with the emphasis on enjoying music and having fun.”
The sessions involve both singing and playing, with a mix of songs and tunes. Musical instruments are supplied, but people can bring their own if they prefer. There will be opportunities to perform at Wren Music events for those who wish to do so.
The group will meet on 27 May, 24 June and 22 July – leading to a relaxed performance as part of Wren Music’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations at Exeter Phoenix on Saturday 29 July.
The venue is fully accessible for mobility issues and wheelchairs. Hot drinks and squash are provided, and we recommend you bring your own mugs. Taking part in the 8-18 group costs just £5 per family, thanks to support from Devon Music Education Hubs, Project Spark, and the Norman Family Trust.
