The very first Okehampton Lanterns Procession on 23rd February

Lanterns logo

Imagine two rivers of lights snaking their way through the streets of Okehampton, with hundreds of lanterns of different shapes and sizes shining aloft, as young and old from all over the town come together for the very first Okehampton Lanterns Procession on Thursday 23rd February in the early evening.

Come and make your own lantern!

Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th February at Okehampton Rugby Club, Glendale Road

Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th February at the St John's Ambulance Community Space, Hameldown Business Park (off the Exeter Road). Okehampton Community Transport will be running a free minibus service leaving Giblands at 10.50am, returning at lunchtime and 3.30pm. If you have transport enquiries on these days, please call 07805 639195 for assistance.

All these lantern making workshops will be open from 11.00am to 3.30pm

The lanterns are made from withies (willow stems), craft tissue paper, tape and glue, and each has a real candle inside. You could make a lantern in about two hours, depending on size and design (and how handy you are!). No experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Making lanterns is fun, but it can be a bit messy, so don't wear your best clothes for the workshops. Please note that all children of primary school age and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult at the workshops and at the Procession.

Peggy Seeger in concert

Peggy SeegerPeggy Seeger is considered to be one of North America's finest female folk singers. She can make traditional ballads or sea shanties sound timeless, yet as current as if written yesterday, accompanying herself on guitar, banjo, concertina, dulcimer or piano. Whether singing songs about ecology and the state of the world, love and life, or feminism and women’s issues, she is pure passion and commitment.

“One of the most important people who ever graced and shaped the British folk scene” fRoots magazine

A benefit concert for Devon's folk arts charity Wren Music, of which Peggy Seeger is an Honorary Patron.
