SUMMARY:Wassail Training Day
DESCRIPTION:The centuries-old tradition of wassailing has never been so popular. From community orchards and neighbourhood streets to family gardens\, more and more people are reviving the winter ritual of toasting their fruit trees and wishing them a fruitful harvest. But what’s the story behind wassailing? And how do you know if you’re doing it right? \nTo help\, we’re hosting a wassail training event in North Devon where people can learn about the origins of wassailing and how to set up their own wassail. The training day is at Jubilee Hall in Swimbridge on Saturday 19 October from 3.30pm to 7.30pm and includes a fitting tea of cider and apple cake. The event is timed to coincide with Apple Day on 21 October\, celebrating the apple harvest and looking forward to ensuring a good harvest next year. \nThe word wassail derives from the Saxon ‘Waes Hael’\, which was a goodwill phrase people would say to each other meaning ‘be hale’ or ‘good health’.  But wassailing goes back much further than Saxon times because it was originally a pagan ritual. \nWassails have regional differences. At the training event\, people will learn about two South West variations. Our Creative Director\, Marilyn Tucker\, explained: “We’re particularly looking at Landkey in Devon and Bodmin in Cornwall. \n“Most people think of wassailing being done only in orchards\, but that’s not so. They’ve been doing wassailing in Bodmin for hundreds of years – in fact\, it was first recorded there in 1624 and they’ve done it ever since. Their town wassailers go around people’s houses and businesses and visit the local pubs\, singing wassailing songs. \n“That’s one way to go wassailing. The other\, which is traditional in rural parts like Landkey\, is to visit the local orchard and sing to the trees and generally make a din to ward off bad spirits and ensure a good harvest for that year. Therefore\, the Landkey wassailers\, who are a much newer group\, hold their event at the Millennium Orchard in the village.” \nWassailers from the Bodmin and Landkey groups will be at the training day\, and some of our singers and musicians will be there to teach the Apple Tree Wassail song.  The event will finish with a question-and-answer session\, and people will be given access to a learning website: “If you want to do a wassail in your own street with your neighbours\, or around an apple tree as a family\, or organise a community wassail at a local orchard\, this training will help you to go about it\,” said Marilyn. \n“It’s lovely that wassailing has become so popular again\, but we want to preserve the tradition as accurately as we can\, and it would be nice for people to understand the significance of how it fits into our customs. So we’ll also be talking about the roots of wassailing as a celebration and why it’s associated with twelfth night in January\, which historically is the correct time to do it. And although wassailing is very much an English tradition\, we’ll be looking at how it relates to other traditions as well.” \nThe event is funded by Arts Council England and is part of a bigger project called Westcountry Midwinter Music\, which also looks at village carols in the region. The day is supported by Dartington Glass of North Devon and sponsored by Landkey cider producers\, Green Man Cider\, who’ll have a range of their bottled cider to purchase. \nThe wassail training day is being promoted by Beaford Arts. Visit their website to book tickets\, £30 admission (includes light buffet tea with cider and apple cake). www.beaford.org/events/wassail.

SUMMARY:Singing for Wellness East Devon
DESCRIPTION:Each session starts with a series of breathing\, relaxation and oxygenation exercises followed by pitch\, tuning and harmonising exercises. The group then learns and sings a few songs. The meetings are also an opportunity for people with respiratory conditions to socialise in a safe environment and there is time at the start of the sessions for a chat and a hot drink.  \nThe Singing for Wellness project is led by Wren Music professional singers\, Paul Wilson\, Sarah Owen\, Hannah Cumming\, Rebecka Lyons and Jon Dyer\, who receive special training from a respiratory physiotherapist at the University of Plymouth.   \nSinging can be of benefit to people with respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some of the singers attending the Music for Wellness choirs say their breathing is improved after each session.  Comments from participants include:  \n“The exercises and the singing definitely help with my breathing. I notice that it’s much better in the days after the sessions\, and then it starts to deteriorate as the week progresses until the next choir session. If there were two sessions a week\, I’d come to both.”  \n“The singing does improve my breathing\, it’s very noticeable the following day. But it does more than that. It gets me out to meet people. It cheers me up.”  \n“I used to love singing\, but I lost my voice. I’m coming to Singing for Wellness because I’m trying to strengthen my voice and they absolutely have helped. Even after only a few sessions\, I’m already feeling the benefit. The exercises we do at the start are brilliant.”  \nSinging for Wellness was initially launched by Wren Music as an NHS-funded pilot in Torbay. As a result of its success\, Wren Music received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to run Singing for Wellness as a long-term project.  \nThe sessions are ‘pay what you can’\, with £5 suggested. \nYou can let us know you will be coming by emailing info@wrenmusic.co.uk or calling 01837 53754\, or just turn up on the day.

SUMMARY:Sing & Play
DESCRIPTION:A social and sensory experience for you and your little one. Small children\, parents and carers can join Wren Music to sing and share songs\, play in a band\, try musical games\, and dance around. \nChildren under five can play with different types of instruments and things that make sound whilst enjoying songs too. Little ones will explore the sounds of real instruments such as drums\, violins and even accordions in a safe and fun way. There’s no need for you to be musical to come along. Making sounds together is a great way to bond with your little one and with other families. We are supported by a group of local volunteers who bring their experiences of childhood singing and who get stuck in learning new instruments too: they help children see that adults can learn something new too! \nOur Sing & Play sessions also provide a sense of community\, with the opportunity to connect with other local parents and carers. Our approach is friendly and accessible. \nSessions run once a week in Okehampton\, at our building Ebenezer Hall\, North Street\, Okehampton\, EX20 1AR \nMusic starts at 10.00am\, we pause for a quick drinks break\, and then continue with the activities until the finish time of 11.30am. \nRun by our professional musician\, Paul Wilson. \nPay what you can\, £3 per family suggested (cash or card). \nPlease note\, there is a flight of stairs to reach the music-making space. If this might present a challenge for you please let us know. There is a safe space at the bottom of the stairs to leave buggies and pushchairs.
