SUMMARY:Singing for Wellness Torbay
DESCRIPTION:Each session starts with a series of breathing\, relaxation and oxygenation exercises followed by pitch\, tuning and harmonising exercises. The group then learns and sings a few songs. The meetings are also an opportunity for people with respiratory conditions to socialise in a safe environment and there is time at the start of the sessions for a chat and a hot drink.  \nThe Singing for Wellness project is led by Wren Music professional singers\, Paul Wilson\, Sarah Owen\, Hannah Cumming\, Rebecka Lyons and Jon Dyer\, who receive special training from a respiratory physiotherapist at the University of Plymouth.   \nSinging can be of benefit to people with respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some of the singers attending the Music for Wellness choirs say their breathing is improved after each session.  Comments from participants include:  \n“The exercises and the singing definitely help with my breathing. I notice that it’s much better in the days after the sessions\, and then it starts to deteriorate as the week progresses until the next choir session. If there were two sessions a week\, I’d come to both.”  \n“The singing does improve my breathing\, it’s very noticeable the following day. But it does more than that. It gets me out to meet people. It cheers me up.”  \n“I used to love singing\, but I lost my voice. I’m coming to Singing for Wellness because I’m trying to strengthen my voice and they absolutely have helped. Even after only a few sessions\, I’m already feeling the benefit. The exercises we do at the start are brilliant.”  \nSinging for Wellness was initially launched by Wren Music as an NHS-funded pilot in Torbay. As a result of its success\, Wren Music received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to run Singing for Wellness as a long-term project.  \nThe sessions are ‘pay what you can’\, with £5 suggested. \nYou can let us know you will be coming by emailing info@wrenmusic.co.uk or calling 01837 53754\, or just turn up on the day.

SUMMARY:Sing & Play
DESCRIPTION:A social and sensory experience for you and your little one. Small children\, parents and carers can join Wren Music to sing and share songs\, play in a band\, try musical games\, and dance around. \nChildren under five can play with different types of instruments and things that make sound whilst enjoying songs too. Little ones will explore the sounds of real instruments such as drums\, violins and even accordions in a safe and fun way. There’s no need for you to be musical to come along. Making sounds together is a great way to bond with your little one and with other families. We are supported by a group of local volunteers who bring their experiences of childhood singing and who get stuck in learning new instruments too: they help children see that adults can learn something new too! \nOur Sing & Play sessions also provide a sense of community\, with the opportunity to connect with other local parents and carers. Our approach is friendly and accessible. \nSessions run once a week in Okehampton\, at our building Ebenezer Hall\, North Street\, Okehampton\, EX20 1AR \nMusic starts at 10.00am\, we pause for a quick drinks break\, and then continue with the activities until the finish time of 11.30am. \nRun by our professional musician\, Paul Wilson. \nPay what you can\, £3 per family suggested (cash or card). \nPlease note\, there is a flight of stairs to reach the music-making space. If this might present a challenge for you please let us know. There is a safe space at the bottom of the stairs to leave buggies and pushchairs.

SUMMARY:Fiddle Tunes of William Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Our very own Paul Wilson will be joined by Devon fiddler Ben van Weede to present an event in three parts. \nThe evening starts with a short presentation from Paul about William Andrews\, the traditional fiddle player from Sheepstor who played to song & tune collector Rev Sabine Baring-Gould in the 1890s. Paul and Ben will then play a few of the tunes arranged for fiddle\, guitar and other instruments\, showing how the William Andrews tunes relate to others from the region. Finally\, there is a participatory workshop\, where players can learn a lesser-known local Dartmoor tune or two to add to their repertoire. Bring your own instrument. \nThe event is part of the Baring-Gould Centenary Programme\, marking the 100th year of his death. It is presented by Wren Music in partnership with the Devonshire Association’s Music and Folklore Section. \nMore info: \nwww.wrenmusic.co.uk/news/dartmoor-fiddler\nwww.sbgcentenary.co.uk\ndevonassoc.org.uk \nTickets are £15 (£9 reduced price). \nDoors open at 7pm.
