SUMMARY:NEW! Wren Folk Club with guest Chris Foster
DESCRIPTION:Our new regular Wren Folk Club sessions begin on Sunday 30 July\, with special guest Chris Foster. It’ll be a relaxed evening of music and song\, and floor spots are welcome – just turn up on the night. \nChris was born in Somerset and now lives in Iceland\, where he’s one half of the folk duo\, Funi. Chris has a long association with Wren Music\, and we are thrilled he’s helping us to launch our new folk club. \nMarilyn Tucker from Wren Music said: “Chris is making it here specially for our 40th anniversary. He was the director of our very first Baring-Gould Festival in 1999\, and he met his now wife\, Bára Grímsdóttir\, at the festival in 2000. It’s going to be a wonderful evening\, and the more people\, the merrier.” \nFor Chris\, the restaurant in the Fountain Inn is the perfect setting. Following the pandemic\, Chris considered what a sustainable\, future live music scene could be like: “For me that could mean smaller intimate scale local events\, both indoors (house concerts anybody?)\, feasts\, good old fashioned folk club scale events\, and outdoors – garden concerts\, campfires\, tailor-made performances in special locations in the countryside\, and so on. \n“I have always really valued the sense of community and sharing that the best of the folk scene has offered. I firmly believe that our music works best at the scale and in the kinds of settings that it grew out of\, so let’s see what we can do.” \nAbout his journey in folk music\, Chris says: “I first got really interested in traditional folk music as a teenager. It set me on a path – or should I say paths? – that I am still exploring several decades later. It has taken me all over Europe\, North America and once\, even to China. I have been privileged to meet and hear many great musicians and I have made many friends along the way. Here’s what you can expect … \nFolk Clubs are a great chance to see concerts in small and intimate venues. Clubs can book a good selection of famous names as well as local and up-and-coming artists\, so they provide an opportunity to see performers up close and personal. As well as featured artists clubs will usually have floor spots where members of the audience can take to the stage for a song or two. Sometimes this is part of an evening with a guest artist\, and at other times whole evenings will be given over to this – often known as ‘singers’ nights or ‘open’ nights.

Small children\, parents and carers can join Wren Music to sing and share songs\, play in a band and dance around. Explore songs and music from around the world together.\nYour little one will play with different types of instruments and things that make sound whilst you enjoy learning songs from different countries. Little ones will explore the sounds of real instruments such as drums\, violins and even accordions in a safe and fun way. There’s no need for you to be musical to come along. Making sounds together is a great way to bond with your little one as you have some dedicated time together. \nOur Sing and Play sessions also provide a sense of community\, with the opportunity to connect with other local parents and carers. DESCRIPTION:Come and join our 40th Anniversary celebrations – a full day of events at the fabulous Exeter Phoenix. \nClick to view Folk Takeover Programme for 29 July \nClick to read more about each individual event in our What’s On pages \nWren Music are taking over Exeter Phoenix from 10am to 11.00pm. \nWith events in the Auditorium\, Studio 1\, Studio 2\, Cinema\, Workshop\, and the Bar & Foyer\, the programme includes events for all ages and abilities to get involved in. It is designed so people can choose which ones they’d like to attend\, and we hope you’ll want to stay all day! \nThe Exeter Phoenix bar and kitchen will be open throughout. \nTickets are free but capacity is limited so please only book what you need. \nWith Sing & Play for children under five and their families\, panel discussions about concepts in folk music\, a Singing for the Terrified workshop and an afternoon Ceilidh\, we hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy. \nThere’s even the chance to learn how to play the bones\, a percussion instrument dating back to ancient times\, and a join in a commemorative crafting workshop. There are also events showcasing some of the work Wren Music has done during the past 40 years. \nIn the Foyer there will be displays about the charity\, including the Top 40 – 40 tunes and songs that hold a particularly special place in the story of Wren Music. \nThe day ends with a Celebration Concert in the Auditorium\, with performances from Wren Music’s community groups and team of professional musicians. The concert features a ‘Wren Music Overture’ played by our new Folk Sinfonietta\, with snippets of all the items in the Wren Music Top 40.

SUMMARY:Devon Inclusive Folk Ensembles
DESCRIPTION:The Devon Inclusive Folk Ensemble is a friendly and welcoming group for children and young people with additional needs and their families to make music together.  We have two age groups: 8 – 18 and 16 – 30\, which allows a period of overlap for ease of transition.    \nThe Devon Inclusive Folk Ensemble is an opportunity for members to sing and to play music together as a group. We sing traditional folk songs and create our own lyrics.  There’s also the chance to try a range of instruments including percussion\, fiddles\, guitars\, accordions and more.   \nEveryone is welcome to join. We meet at InFocus College at Topsham Road\, Countess Wear\, Exeter\, which is fully accessible for mobility issues and wheelchairs.   \nThe Devon Inclusive Folk Ensemble meets during once a month. For the older group\, the session is 2 hours long and is split into sections so you can stay for as much or as little as works for you.
