Devon Youth Folk Ensemble OPEN EVENT

Sunday 19 September 2021 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Cygnet Theatre, Friar’s Gate, Devon, Exeter, EX2 4AZ

The Devon Youth Folk Ensemble launches this September.

We are opening the doors for the first rehearsal with musicians Jon and Sarah, to allow anyone to come in and see what it’s all about. This session will be free to attend.

If you’d like to attend this open rehearsal please just contact us so we know how many people to expect. If you play an instrument let us know what it is, and don’t forget to bring it along. Please also bring a packed lunch.

The Ensemble is non-auditioned and open to any person aged 13-18 (or from school years 8-13) to sing or play and develop their folk music skills.

You’ll get expert tuition, write new songs and upskill your vocal or instrumental techniques to give you the confidence to perform live.

Anyone can join as a singer, you don’t need any experience.

Instrumentalists should have their own acoustic instrument and be comfortable tuning and playing it at a basic level. There is no need to read music and you don’t need to be achieving grades.

Our approach is fully accessible and inclusive for both those who have no music theory education, to more experienced young musicians. You’ll develop techniques from the folk genre. This includes improvising harmonies, composition, making arrangements and learning by ear, plus learning about the common modes and time signatures of folk music.

Anyone who wants to join the ensemble will get in! After September we’ll meet twice a month, once online and once in person in Exeter. The year is spent learning and developing your skills and repertoire ready for summer gigs!

There is no need for adults to attend with young people, but they are welcome to stay for this session if they wish.
