WREN MUSIC VOCAL WORKOUTS
Tuesdays 6th May, 3rd June, and 24th June, 7.00 - 9.00pm
Palace Theatre, Palace Avenue, Paignton, Devon TQ3 3HF
This brand new series of vocal workouts for adults will focus on finding one's own voice, freeing it up, and learning traditional, world and roots songs. All voices and all abilities are welcome, from complete beginners to seasoned singers. There are no auditions, and no prior experience of singing is necessary - just a desire to have fun with music with other people. Each workout will be self-contained, and people who are interested are welcome to come along on any or all of the evenings.
Wren Music does not work within the classical format of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, and does not expect people to read music. It works instead with people's natural voices, and learning by ear, enabling all to take part, whatever their pitch range or musical training. These vocal workouts will be led by Matt Norman and Sarah Owen from the Wren Music team of professional singers, musicians and composers.
Thanks to investment in the project by Arts Council England South West and Torbay Council, the fee for each workout session is only £7.00, with a concessionary rate of £5.00 for full time students and people in receipt of income-related benefit.
Matt Norman is one of the leading lights of the new Devon folk generation, now gaining a national reputation as a performer. Over the past couple of years he has performed at major folk festivals, including the Sidmouth and Baring-Gould Folk Festivals. His recently released CD 'Eight Days Late' has been well received by lovers of acoustic folk music - Songlines Magazine commented, "Whippersnapper takes on big English tunes, and wins".
Matt is looking forward to the workouts: "I am really excited about these opportunities to come and make music and new friends in South Devon. Singing folk songs is such fun, and it always amazes me just how quickly everyone picks up the songs and joins in the glorious harmonies."
Sarah Owen is a composer, singer and workshop leader with experience in a wide range of music making. She has worked with Spitalfields Festival in London on singing, song writing and multi-media projects in the Festival's Education and Community Programme, and has returned to her native Devon on completing a Masters Degree in studio composition at Goldsmiths College, London.
