Exeter Singing Roots, known as 'Singing Roots', is the city's folk and world music vocal ensemble for young people
aged 8 - 18, directed by professional singer and singing leader, Sarah Owen from Wren Music.
The group is inspired by folk music from around the world, as well as traditional music from here in Devon. We enjoy writing our
own folk-inspired songs, as well as re-inventing very old songs for a new audience. New members are always welcome, and can
have the first session free to try the group out.
A typical session involves a fun and active warm-up to get bodies, breath and voices ready to sing. Next we always do something new to get our brains buzzing and to take us straight into practicing singing in harmony. The rest of the session includes learning and rehearsing an exciting range of songs from around the world, featuring beautiful harmonies and strong, ear-catching melody lines.
Throughout the session we practise important singing techniques such as developing our vocal range and exploring the different sounds our voices can make. We also have time to take a well-earned break half way through, and play some games along the way! The emphasis is on having fun together and making friends whilst enjoying using your voice.
You are encouraged to bring your own songs/songs you've found to the group. You can teach them too, if you want - developing leadership skills along the way and improving confidence through sharing your knowledge . There's no need to read music (but you can if you like), and we learn by ear, which is fantastic for developing your aural skills and memory.
Regular performances at festivals, local events and concerts are a great chance to show family, friends - and the whole community - what you can do.
