Baring-Gould Folk Festival - 26th-28th October

This year is the 20th Baring-Gould Folk weekend. We started out in the villages of Lewdown and Bratton Clovelly in 1999, and after five years we outgrew these venues and moved into Okehampton.

The Folk Weekend is dedicated to Revd. Sabine Baring-Gould, 19th century folk song collector based here in West Devon, and so our festival takes a special interest in song, and we evoke the spirit of Harvest Festival. Okehampton is a delightful former market town on the northern slopes of Dartmoor.  We make use of community and church halls for the Festival Weekend, and the town offers a range of accommodation to suit most pockets making the Baring-Gold Folk Weekend perfect autumn break.

This year’s artists include Polly Bolton, Georgia Lewis, Hannah Cumming, Martin and Shan Graebe, Trev Munkenbeck, Bill Murray and the festival ceilidh will be led by the eclectic Banter.

Members of the Wren Music team are on hand and we encourage you to become part of the folk weekend community. There are plenty opportunities for people to join in, through pub playing and shanty sessions, to folk clubs and chalkboard concerts. The festival artists are all briefed to join in these with you. Polly Bolton will lead the Festival Choir and Becki Driscoll is back after her maternity leave to lead the Festival Orchestra.

The Sunday is very much a family day with the annual conker competition, and special events for children and families.

Tickets: £40 for the whole weekend, and we offer ‘Buy Three, Get One Free’ on weekend tickets (so a group of four can come to the whole weekend for £120)
Under 18 weekend Ticket £20
Family Ticket (up to two adults and three children £80)

Baring-Gould Folk Song School - Monday 22nd - Friday 26th October

Dedicated to local folk song collector Revd Sabine Baring-Gould, the annual Folk Song School gives you time out to concentrate on your own singing: your voice, your performance, your repertoire.

The Song School will be held at Wren Music's headquarters, Ebenezer Hall - a converted chapel in the delightful moorland town of Okehampton.  You can find accommodation to fit most pockets, with hotels and guest houses, and YHA, and there are spaces for camping/camper vans at the Youth Hostel.

This year our guest tutor will be Chris Coe, folk singer,

traditional ballad expert with an holistic vocal technique

that integrates the voice with the whole body.

The Wren team is led by co-founders Paul Wilson and Marilyn Tucker, who will have spent most of this summer taking English folk song to other parts of Europe as far apart as Iceland and Sardinia.

Each day, tuition is done in a range of settings from large group work, to one-to-one surgeries with the tutors, and many additional small group session are developed as the week goes on.

Topics include: finding your strong voice, pitching, building your repertoire, understanding traditional songs and singers, accompaniments, overcoming nerves and so on ...

The week is suitable for first time singers through to professionals - and the emphasis is on learner led activities, one-to-one and/or small group working with individual tutors and peer support.

Price £300 - Book here ...

Plus an option on a £25 Baring-Gould Folk Weekend ticket (26th to 28th October)
